Abstract

This illustrated cultural article examines the presence of the book and knowledge in European visual art through a visual and cultural perspective linking the development of intellectual awareness with the social status of the book. It shows how painters documented aspects of intellectual and educational life through artworks depicting reading, learning, informed conversation, and the book as a symbol of enlightenment and civilization. The article also refers to the impact of European intellectual and philosophical transformations, particularly empirical materialism and rational proof, on changing the relationship between human beings, knowledge, and books. The visual examples accompanying the text represent different artistic approaches and reveal the place of the book within family, social, and cultural settings.
