The Role of Emirati Cultural Institutions in Book Publishing

Abstract

This introductory note presents the general framework of the issue dossier devoted to the role of Emirati cultural institutions in publishing books and intellectual and cultural periodicals. It states that the Libraries Administration in Sharjah organized an intellectual and discussion-based symposium to examine the experience of cultural institutions in the UAE in the field of publishing, with attention to the issues connected to this experience in light of new developments and challenges arising from globalization and its evolving tools. The note clarifies that the dossier offers an essential overview of the symposium contributions that enriched the discussion, making it a framing text rather than a full independent study. Its significance lies in setting the context for the dossier and directing readers toward a cultural theme related to institutional publishing, cultural policy, and the role of Emirati institutions in producing and circulating knowledge.
