Abstract

This working paper examines the experience of security book publishing at the Sharjah Police General Directorate through an applied study of the Sharjah Police Research Center and its role in producing and disseminating security and police knowledge. The paper begins by situating the emergence of security books in the region, noting that this field was not widely established before the 1990s, and then traces Sharjah Police’s move toward issuing specialized security studies and books, beginning with field studies such as research on bounced cheques. It reviews the Center’s vision, mission, objectives, and functions, including improving police performance, building a security information base, keeping pace with developments in police work, and promoting security awareness. The paper also explains the stages of book production within the Center, from reading, review, and refereeing to typesetting, design, printing, and distribution, and describes both internal authorship and the use of external researchers or translators. It discusses the Center’s security, police, social, and administrative publications, as well as publication rules for research papers, reports, reviews, and translations. The item is significant as a documentary case of specialized institutional security publishing in the UAE, linking scholarly research, public awareness, and the development of police performance.
