Abstract
This article discusses reading in the age of modern media and information abundance. It begins from the premise that contemporary society is marked by an unprecedented expansion of knowledge, accelerated circulation of news and data, and the spread of information through newspapers, broadcasting channels, and electronic networks. The article argues that these transformations do not diminish the importance of books and free reading; rather, they make reading more necessary for developing awareness, general culture, critical thinking, and informed choice. The author highlights the benefits of free reading in expanding knowledge, stimulating imagination, following scientific, political, and social developments, strengthening expression and dialogue skills, and making productive use of leisure time. The article also addresses practical questions concerning what to read, when to read, where to read, and how to handle books. It identifies major obstacles to free reading, including dependence on formal curricula, lack of interest, limited time, excessive reliance on the Internet, and fear of eye strain. It concludes with practical guidance for cultivating the habit of reading from an early age and emphasizes the roles of the family, school, and library in nurturing readers.
