Abstract
The article examines the condition of the book in the Arab world as a product of broader economic, social, political, and cultural structures that shape its production, circulation, and reception. It addresses the tension between the inherited wisdom of Arab book culture and future-oriented challenges related to publishing legislation, censorship, professional standards, and institutional transparency. The article also reflects on the relationship between the author, the text, and the reader, drawing on modern critical notions such as the “death of the author.” It then moves to the interaction between text and image, the visual equivalent, and the paratextual elements of the book, including titles, margins, layout, and print design. The article argues that the development of the Arab book cannot rely on intellectual content alone; it requires an integrated vision that combines meaning, visual aesthetics, technical competence, and a publishing culture capable of producing a contemporary Arab book with cognitive, cultural, and communicative impact.
