Abstract

The article examines reading as a complex cognitive act that goes beyond the mechanical recognition of printed words to the construction of meaning, the development of awareness, imagination, and intellectual capacity. It argues that reading shapes the individual intellectually and emotionally by opening access to accumulated human experiences embodied in texts and books. The article discusses the relationship between reader, writer, and text, emphasizing that comprehension is not achieved merely through pronunciation or symbol recognition, but through perception, concentration, and the connection of meanings with prior experience. It also outlines key skills required for effective reading, including visual accuracy, eye movement, attention, semantic discrimination, and the ability to grasp both explicit and implicit meanings. The article further distinguishes between silent and oral reading, concluding with a call to cultivate reading habits among students and young readers as a foundation for culture, knowledge, and intellectual growth.
