Abstract

This research paper examines the concept, origins, and development of digital libraries in light of technological transformations in the production, organization, and dissemination of information. It explores the relationship between advances in computing, communication networks, and the Internet, and the shift from traditional library models toward digital environments based on electronic access, automated catalogs, databases, and multimedia resources. The paper also reviews a range of international and Arab digital library projects, highlighting their role in expanding access to knowledge and supporting education and scientific research. It further discusses the requirements for building digital libraries, including technical infrastructure, resource organization, institutional cooperation, and user training, as well as challenges related to cost, selection, intellectual property rights, and the sustainability of digital access. The paper concludes that digital libraries represent a qualitative extension of library functions rather than a simple replacement for the traditional library, reshaping the user’s relationship with information in a connected and constantly evolving knowledge environment.
