Abstract

This article examines the transformations of the book in relation to visual text, arguing that the book is no longer a purely linguistic vessel based solely on words and letters, but a complex space in which image, design, print layout, modern media, and the reader’s visual memory interact. The author discusses the impact of technological and cultural shifts on the reshaping of the Arabic book, from cover design and internal layout to the use of photography, illustration, visual arts, and graphic elements in the production of meaning. The article also points to the relatively slow response of the Arabic book to some of these transformations compared with Western publishing practices. It emphasizes that the image should not be treated as a decorative addition, but as a cognitive and semantic structure that participates in shaping discourse. The study further extends its scope to visual arts, Islamic ornamentation, and multimedia, concluding that the future of the book depends on its ability to integrate text, image, and technology into a richer and more open reading experience.
