Abstract

This article examines the production of Arab writers and thinkers between traditional publishing mechanisms and the emerging practices of blogging and electronic publishing. It focuses on the difficulties faced by new literary voices in accessing printed cultural platforms, especially under commercial, institutional, and editorial constraints. The author begins with a brief historical overview of printing and publishing, then discusses the obstacles of publishing in the Arab world, including high printing costs, the limited number of cultural periodicals, the complexity of paper-based publication, and the limited opportunities available to young and unknown writers. The article presents the Internet as an alternative cultural space that enables authors to publish through websites and blogs, interact directly with readers, and bypass some traditional selection mechanisms. It highlights the advantages of electronic publishing, such as rapid circulation, multiple platforms, and immediate feedback, while also noting problems of quality control, genre confusion, and weak editorial filtering. The article concludes by presenting the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information and the Sharjah Award for Arab Creativity as an institutional model for supporting young creative writers and publishing their works.
