Abstract

This article examines the impact of digitization on culture by highlighting the transformation brought by modern technology to the production, circulation, and retrieval of knowledge. The author argues that technological progress cannot be separated from human development, and that respect for laws, rights, and ethical values is essential for meaningful use of technology. The article discusses the role of e-books, electronic libraries, and information networks in providing researchers and readers with access to books, documents, manuscripts, images, and statistics regardless of location. It compares traditional and digital libraries, emphasizing that electronic libraries do not cancel the role of libraries but expand their capacity to support social development, cultural awareness, and research. The article also addresses the shift from printed information carriers to networks and databases, underlining the importance of fast and efficient information retrieval. It concludes by calling for greater Arab and Islamic electronic publishing and for legislation that protects authors’ rights in the digital environment.
