Abstract

This article discusses the relocation of Sharjah Public Library to its new premises as a cultural and institutional step that strengthens the library’s role in promoting reading and access to knowledge in Sharjah. It opens with a reflection on the importance of books and reading in human and social development, linking this role to Sharjah’s commitment to making reading available to all members of society. The article provides a brief historical account of the library’s origins, names, and locations, tracing its development from its association with the library of Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi to its move to a new site near the Palace of Culture. It highlights the advantages of the new building, including its location, accessibility, expanded services, and inclusive orientation toward users. Through questions addressed to the Director of Library Administration, the article also presents the main programs accompanying the new phase, including cultural and social activities, electronic studies and publishing services, and the modernization of the library website to make it more interactive. The article concludes that the new premises reflect a broader cultural vision of the library as an open institution for knowledge, reading, and community engagement.
