Abstract

This study examines the prospects and future of electronic publishing by analyzing the transformations brought about by computers and the Internet in the production, circulation, preservation, and accessibility of knowledge. It begins with a technical overview of the Internet and its main services, including e-mail, newsgroups, search engines, file transfer, and multimedia. The study then defines electronic publishing and distinguishes it from traditional publishing, emphasizing features such as speed, wide dissemination, storage capacity, retrieval, and the ability to overcome spatial and temporal limitations. It discusses the advantages of electronic publishing in reducing costs, facilitating access, expanding readership, and enabling new textual forms such as hypertext, interactive articles, and multimedia-based works. The study also explores its effects on books, libraries, journals, journalism, Arabic digital content, culture, reading practices, and literary creativity. At the same time, it identifies major challenges, including weak technological infrastructure, the digital divide, language barriers, content quality, intellectual property rights, and copyright in the digital environment. It concludes that the future of electronic publishing depends on the ability of Arab cultural and scientific institutions to develop digital content, update legislation, improve user skills, and establish policies that balance the free circulation of knowledge with the protection of rights.
