Abstract
This article examines the current role of libraries and the challenges they face in the modern age, emphasizing their function in preserving, organizing, and providing access to knowledge. It presents libraries not merely as repositories of books but as cultural and informational institutions serving society. The article identifies several types of libraries, including public, specialized, children’s, mosque, school, youth-center, and mobile libraries, showing that their diversity does not diminish their shared mission of providing information resources and services to users. It discusses the objectives and functions of libraries, such as cultivating aesthetic taste, supporting information services, providing current knowledge, encouraging self-learning, and helping users make productive use of leisure time. The article also highlights the role of libraries and information centers in preserving national heritage, promoting cultural awareness, supporting scientific research, encouraging reading, and facilitating knowledge exchange. In its final section, it addresses electronic publishing as a future-oriented challenge for libraries, explaining its role in distributing information through electronic media, enabling faster access and interaction between publishers and users, while also raising legal and organizational issues related to the reproduction, circulation, and protection of information.
