Abstract

This article examines the historically ambiguous relationship between authors and publishers in the Arab context. It begins by contrasting the institutional development of the publishing industry in the West with the delayed and fragmented organization of publishing in Arab countries. The article argues that the relationship is essentially complementary: the author produces knowledge or creative work, while the publisher transforms it into a cultural product capable of reaching readers. However, the Arab publishing environment is presented as marked by persistent tension caused by weak legal frameworks, unclear contracts, ambiguous rights and obligations, and mutual mistrust between authors and publishers. The article also discusses issues related to translation rights, adaptation of literary works for cinema, theatre, or television, free author copies, editorial and commercial interference, and the impact of consumer culture and digital networks on the book industry. It concludes by calling for clearer legislation, active professional associations, fair contractual practices, literary agency mechanisms, and cultural policies that support reading, publishing, and the protection of creative work.
