Abstract

This article discusses electronic periodicals as a result of developments in computers, communication technologies, and electronic publishing, with particular attention to their role in libraries, information institutions, and research centers. It defines an electronic periodical as a continuously issued digital or computer-based publication, made available online or through electronic media, with a stable title and contributions from multiple authors. The article outlines the main characteristics of electronic periodicals, including advanced search capabilities, ease of browsing, access at any time and from any place, regular or irregular continuity, and availability through subscription or free access. It also highlights their benefits for libraries and users, such as reducing overcrowding in library spaces, saving shelf space, enabling copying and storage, supporting interaction between users and the publication, and helping authors and publishers identify readership levels. At the same time, the article identifies several limitations, including difficulties in converting electronic periodicals into traditional printed form, the need for computers and internet access, challenges for untrained users, copyright and intellectual property concerns, preference for paper-based reading among some users, slow internet connections, and high subscription costs. The article concludes that electronic periodicals require libraries to modernize their services and technical management in order to serve researchers and users effectively.
