Abstract

This article examines the transformations brought about by websites in the library profession, arguing that the digital environment is no longer merely a supporting tool for library institutions but a domain that reshapes the roles of libraries, information specialists, and their services. It begins with the historical relationship between libraries and knowledge-preservation media, then moves to the impact of the web on expanding library services, changing patterns of communication with users, and enabling access to information sources through more interactive digital channels. The article analyzes several dimensions affecting the profession, including the social dimension related to changing community needs, the informational and cognitive dimension concerned with organizing and providing access to information resources, the technical dimension involving search engines, databases, and digital libraries, and the linguistic-semantic dimension linked to description, indexing, and retrieval. It also addresses intellectual, political, spatial, and professional dimensions that shape the position of libraries and librarians within the networked society. The article concludes that the library profession must develop its competencies and practices, particularly in digital content management, information analysis, reference services, service marketing, and direct interaction with users in web environments.
