Abstract

This article addresses the importance of professional development for staff working in libraries and information centers in light of rapid technological changes affecting the field. It emphasizes that information specialists must continuously update their knowledge and skills in order to perform their roles effectively, serve users, and keep pace with modern systems and tools. The article presents professional development as a process of continuing education, both formal and informal, aimed at improving staff competence and performance in a changing professional environment. It reviews several means of professional development, including enrollment in specialized study programs, practical training, field visits, participation in professional associations, attendance at conferences, seminars, study groups, and workshops, and subscription to specialized periodicals. The article also explains that successful training programs require clear criteria, including relevance to trainees’ needs, up-to-date content, the acquisition of new skills, varied training methods, adequate learning materials, and systematic evaluation. It concludes that responsibility for professional development lies not only with institutions, but also with library professionals themselves, who must actively follow new developments and continuously improve their competencies.
