Abstract

This article examines the history of book acquisition among the Shinqitis as a central expression of their deep engagement with learning, reading, authorship, and scholarly transmission. The author highlights the status of the book within Shinqiti culture and its close connection to the mahdara, scholars, and students. The article identifies the main methods through which books were obtained, including purchase, copying, borrowing, gifting, waqf, scholarly travel, pilgrimage journeys, and the circulation of books between centers of learning. It also emphasizes the value of manuscripts and rare books in the formation of private and family libraries, and their role in sustaining traditional education and preserving Arab-Islamic heritage. Beyond celebrating the Shinqitis’ attachment to books, the article discusses the obstacles that restricted acquisition and circulation, such as scarcity of copies, high prices, difficult mobility, limited resources, risks of loss and damage, and the social and scholarly conditions surrounding lending and ownership. The article concludes that book acquisition among the Shinqitis was a fundamental cultural and intellectual practice that contributed to the preservation of scholarly memory and written heritage despite material, geographical, and social constraints.
