Abstract

This article examines the protection of library collections from damage, loss, and theft as a central responsibility in library management and the preservation of knowledge resources. It identifies the main threats to information carriers, including dust and sand, air pollution, humidity, high temperature, light exposure, insects, fungi, natural disasters, fire, water damage, and misuse by some users. The article explains how these factors affect paper, ink, bindings, and printed collections, and proposes preventive measures such as environmental control, ventilation, cleaning, humidity and temperature monitoring, reduced light exposure, pest control, and disaster preparedness. It also devotes attention to proper book-handling practices inside libraries, emphasizing user awareness regarding careful reading, avoiding folded pages, writing, tearing, or exposing books to damage. The article further discusses book loss and theft, presenting preventive procedures that include security planning, supervision, circulation control, reproduction or digitization, and clear rules for library use. It concludes that protecting library holdings requires not only technical procedures, but also an integrated culture of professional awareness, preventive planning, staff training, and continuous user education.
