Abstract

This translated article examines the development of Middle East studies in China over six decades by tracing the emergence of Chinese academic interest in the Arab world and the Middle East and its institutional, methodological, and political transformations. It presents the historical background of Chinese studies related to the region since the founding of the People’s Republic of China and explains how diplomatic, ideological, and economic changes shaped this research field. The article discusses the role of universities, research centers, academic associations, journals, and conferences in building specialized Chinese knowledge of the Middle East. It highlights key themes addressed by Chinese scholars, including China-Arab relations, energy, Islam, Arabic language, political issues, and social transformations in the region. It also identifies challenges facing the field, such as limited methodological accumulation, the need for deeper specialization, restricted access to sources, and linguistic and epistemic difficulties. The article concludes that Middle East studies in China have moved from limited interest to a more organized and expanding academic field, whose future depends on developing research institutions, strengthening translation and academic communication, and producing more balanced knowledge of the Arab world.
