Linguistic Proofreading and Its Role in Preserving the Arabic Language

Abstract

This article examines linguistic proofreading as a scholarly and professional practice that contributes to protecting Arabic from error, inconsistency, and stylistic weakness, while improving texts published in newspapers, books, media platforms, and digital environments. The author explains the concept and scope of proofreading, distinguishing it from the mere hunting of mistakes and presenting it as a knowledge-based task that requires command of grammar, morphology, spelling, style, terminology, and textual context. The article discusses practical aspects of language editing, including correction of common errors, revision of structures, punctuation, terminology checking, and attention to both text type and intended audience. It also highlights the role of the proofreader in press institutions and publishing houses, and reviews the efforts of linguists and scholars who worked to correct usage and preserve Arabic. The article further addresses modern technologies, including electronic proofreading and machine translation, noting both their benefits and the problems they raise regarding accuracy of meaning and stylistic soundness. It concludes that proofreading is not a merely formal task, but a central means of preserving Arabic and strengthening cultural and media discourse.
