Abstract

This article discusses the transformation of cataloging and the role of catalogers in the electronic environment. It shows that cataloging is no longer only a traditional process for organizing information resources, but has become a central tool for effective information retrieval and access in libraries and information centers. The article traces the shift from printed and card catalogs to automated catalogs, databases, online catalogs, and Internet-based access tools, highlighting the resulting developments in bibliographic description, organization, and subject analysis. It also addresses the importance of subject catalogs, subject headings, and relationships among terms in facilitating searching and access to information resources, especially amid the rapid growth of electronic and Internet resources. The article emphasizes the new role of the cataloger as a knowledge intermediary who needs both technical and professional skills to manage databases, create access points, control terminology, and improve discoverability. It concludes that modernizing cataloging practices in Arab libraries is essential for keeping pace with the electronic environment, improving user services, and strengthening cooperation and exchange of bibliographic records.
