Abstract
This article examines the applications of information networks in libraries and information centers, emphasizing the role of information and communication technologies in improving library functions such as description, storage, retrieval, access, and service delivery. It explains the concept and importance of information networks in connecting libraries and information institutions, and highlights their contribution to cooperation, resource sharing, service development, and access to local and global information sources. The article discusses the requirements for establishing information networks, including planning, goal setting, data gathering, cost estimation, software and hardware selection, communication infrastructure, and qualified human resources. It also addresses standards and protocols for data exchange, union catalogs, interlibrary loan, reference services, selective dissemination of information, and online searching. The article further explores the role of the Internet in libraries and information centers, including communication, lending, resource registration, electronic publishing, e-mail, news services, file transfer, and access to databases and digital theses. Based on the available pages, the article concludes that information networks are a strategic necessity for modern libraries because they expand service reach, reduce duplication, support institutional cooperation, and connect users to knowledge resources more quickly and flexibly.
