Abstract

Research data refers to the set of observations, notes, numbers, and opinions related to a particular phenomenon or problem, which are collected, observed, or created for the purpose of analyzing the results of scientific research. They are the outcomes of the research process and constitute an essential part of the evidence required to evaluate research findings and reconstruct the stages and processes that led to them. Their value increases when they are made more available for reuse in addressing new research questions. In recent years, research data has received growing attention, accompanied by increasing recognition of the importance of managing it. This interest has been intensified by the expansion and complexity of research data, the urgent need to share it among researchers to accelerate scientific progress and avoid duplication of effort—especially during recurring global health crises—and the need to comply with funders’ requirements to secure research funding. It has also been reinforced by growing awareness of reliability and transparency in scientific research, the rise of the open science movement, and the support of international bodies and organizations for sharing research outputs and making them accessible without restrictions. This theoretical study addresses the nature and importance of research data, the issues associated with its management and sharing, including the research data life cycle, models and principles of research data management, the role of libraries in enhancing the management and accessibility of research data, data management plan tools, digital object identifiers, and research data repositories, while also discussing the key challenges and available opportunities.
