Abstract
This article examines the role of libraries and information institutions in preserving heritage in the United Arab Emirates. It begins with the history of printing and publishing in the UAE, marked by the establishment of Oman Press in 1959, while also referring to earlier or parallel Arabic publications printed outside the country, particularly in India, which contributed to forming an early foundation for preserving popular heritage and national identity. The article clarifies key concepts related to heritage, tangible heritage, and intangible or immaterial heritage, emphasizing that understanding these concepts is essential for recognizing the value of heritage and the need to safeguard it. It also highlights the role of libraries in collecting, organizing, preserving, and making heritage resources accessible, focusing on leading Emirati examples such as the Sharjah Institute for Heritage and the Juma Al Majid Center for Culture and Heritage.
