Abstract
This editorial examines the changing mission of libraries through the principle of open access to knowledge, linking the tradition of knowledge sharing in Arab and Islamic civilization with contemporary digitization, open resources, and the expanding digital presence of modern libraries. It argues that the value of today’s library is no longer determined solely by its physical collections, but increasingly by its ability to organize digital content, facilitate access to information, and serve students, researchers, and the wider community while respecting the rights of authors and creators. The editorial also introduces the major themes addressed in the issue, including the development of academic libraries, the educational responsibility of libraries, cyber education, artificial intelligence, social impact, and the role of professional associations and international organizations in supporting digital transformation. It further highlights the issue’s broader engagement with culture, marketing, emerging technologies, and lifelong reading. The editorial ultimately affirms the evolving role of libraries in education, knowledge development, and community service within the cultural development of Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates.
