Abstract
This interview presents the perspectives of Vicki McDonald, former President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), on the role of libraries and librarians in building communities and strengthening the profession at both local and global levels. It examines her experience leading IFLA during 2023–2025, including her priorities of improving governance, building trust, enhancing communication with members, and strengthening the collective voice of libraries, as well as the challenges of balancing professional responsibilities with the leadership of an international voluntary organization. The interview also explores how international experiences shaped her professional outlook, particularly her visits to the Middle East and the United Arab Emirates, including Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, House of Wisdom, and the centenary celebrations of Sharjah Public Libraries. A major theme is the future of libraries in the age of artificial intelligence, with attention to opportunities for service personalization, workflow efficiency, improved access to digital collections, and digital inclusion, alongside ethical risks and the need to address misinformation. The interview concludes that sustainable and effective libraries must remain closely aligned with community needs, invest in their staff, strengthen professional collaboration, and adopt effective communication and marketing, while encouraging emerging librarians to embrace new experiences, adaptability, and calculated risk-taking.
