Abstract
This article presents an analytical reading of membership in Dubai Public Libraries on the basis of data relating to registered library users within the public library network of Dubai Municipality. It opens with a brief account of the history and development of the public library in Dubai and its branches and services, then moves to the conditions and privileges of membership, before offering a quantitative analysis of member distribution by country and nationality, by library branch, by age group, and by gender. The tables and charts presented on pages 2–6 reveal the breadth and diversity of the membership base, while also showing the predominance of certain national and age groups and the uneven distribution of members across library branches.
The article highlights the importance of statistical analysis for understanding patterns of use in public library services and for relating membership policy to the social profile of Dubai’s local community. It also shows how branch design and service characteristics influence the attraction of specific user groups, especially in relation to children’s libraries and the relative separation of facilities for men and women. The piece therefore constitutes an applied contribution to the assessment of public library use and demonstrates how membership data can be employed to improve service planning, guide administrative policy, and strengthen the library’s responsiveness to the city’s diverse demographic and cultural composition.
