Abstract
This article documents “Book in a Newspaper” as a pioneering Arab cultural initiative designed to return the book to everyday public life by distributing it widely and free of charge through newspapers. The text explains the concept of the project, its cultural and intellectual background, and the motivations behind its launch, most notably the rising cost of books, the difficulty of reaching broad readerships, and the need to move beyond the conventional relationship between readers and printed books toward more accessible and socially inclusive channels. The article makes clear that the initiative was not intended to replace the book in its traditional form, but rather to expand readership and restore the connection between the public and the act of reading.
The article also documents the institutional dimension of the project by referring to the role of UNESCO, the contribution of Arab cultural bodies, and the participation of newspapers that helped bring the initiative to a mass audience. It reviews the project’s goals, achievements, and successive cycles, and includes statements and testimonies reflecting its cultural impact. The text gains additional documentary value from its inclusion of lists of participating newspapers and selected titles from some of the project’s cycles, making it not only a descriptive cultural article but also a partial bibliographic record of a major Arab reading-promotion initiative. Overall, the article presents the project as an experiment in democratizing access to books and strengthening the shared Arab cultural sphere through print media.
