Abstract
This contribution presents the Juma Al-Majid Centre for Culture and Heritage as a leading cultural, informational, and heritage institution in the United Arab Emirates. Combining institutional description with statistical reporting for the year 2000, the text traces the Centre’s development from a private initiative rooted in Juma Al-Majid’s commitment to books, learning, and cultural preservation into an organized establishment devoted to collecting, preserving, and making available books, manuscripts, documents, and periodicals. The article emphasizes that the Centre was conceived not merely as a conventional library, but as an integrated institution serving scholarly research, preserving Arab and Islamic heritage, encouraging studies on the UAE and the Gulf region, and fostering cooperation with cultural bodies and information centers inside and outside the country.
The text further details the Centre’s internal structure, including the Library and Information Administration, Manuscripts Administration, National Heritage Division, Cultural Department, and Administrative Affairs Division, while explaining the functions and services associated with each unit. It also shows that the Centre serves researchers broadly and provides access to reference materials, databases, theses, periodicals, audiovisual resources, photocopying, and bibliographic support. The contribution gains additional documentary value from the statistical tables it includes on users, inquiries, circulated materials, photocopy requests, and the materials whose records had been computerized by the end of 2000. As such, the piece stands as an important reference document on the Centre’s role in the fields of libraries and information, manuscripts, archives, and cultural heritage preservation.
