Abstract

This contribution is a documentary press archive that chronologically records major developments related to libraries and information services during 2001. Rather than offering a single-topic analytical study, it assembles short newspaper-based reports covering digital initiatives, library projects, academic and professional awards, institutional openings, and broader developments in information access. Its value lies in documenting a transitional moment in which the library field in the UAE and the wider Arab region was increasingly shaped by the internet, electronic services, digitization, and networked information environments.

The piece also reflects the widening concept of the library at the beginning of the new millennium: libraries appear not only as places for print access, but as gateways to databases, electronic journals, rare manuscript digitization, remote services, and cultural cooperation across institutions and countries. Through reports on the launch of library websites, the development of electronic library services, support for Alexandria Library, Al-Azhar’s manuscript digitization efforts, Zayed University’s electronic access systems, and related heritage and information initiatives, the article functions as a valuable documentary source for understanding the professional news landscape of libraries and information work in that period.
