Abstract

This study examines bibliographic activity in the Arab world and its relationship to the control of intellectual output by discussing the concept, functions, and importance of bibliography in recording, organizing, and identifying Arab intellectual production. The article explains that bibliographic activity constitutes a fundamental instrument of bibliographic control over knowledge resources and facilitates access to Arab intellectual output in its various fields. It also links bibliography to the preservation of Arab cultural memory and to the development of services in libraries and information centers. The study presents the theoretical foundations of bibliographic activity, its aims, types, and components, while highlighting the relation between national, current, and specialized bibliographies on the one hand and the control of Arab intellectual output on the other.

The study then moves to the Arab reality in this field by reviewing the centers and institutions concerned with bibliographic preparation, national efforts in a number of Arab countries, and the role of national and current bibliographies in tracing books, periodicals, and other information materials. It includes a comparative table of current Arab national bibliographies and discusses the obstacles that limit the effectiveness of bibliographic activity, such as weak legal deposit, uneven institutional structures, insufficient standardization, and limited coordination among responsible bodies. The article concludes that the development of Arab bibliographic activity requires stronger national institutions, modernized control tools, wider use of new technologies, and greater Arab cooperation in order to achieve more effective bibliographic control over intellectual output in the Arab world.
