Abstract
This article examines Internet services at the University of Sharjah Library as a key mechanism for facilitating access to intellectual output and supporting higher education and scientific research. It introduces the establishment and academic development of the University of Sharjah, then focuses on the library’s role in providing printed and electronic information resources and connecting users to local and global information networks. The article highlights the library’s adoption of automated systems for cataloging and technical services, the creation of a library web page, and the organization of Internet links and resources according to subjects and the needs of faculty members and students. It also discusses several Internet-based services, including bibliographic services, document delivery, electronic journals, CD-ROM resources, and information retrieval services, while emphasizing the importance of user training. The article concludes that the Internet has expanded access to knowledge resources, strengthened interlibrary communication, and reduced the cost of information access, thereby enhancing the academic library’s role in research and education.
