Abstract

This editorial note addresses the rapid transformation of knowledge and information transfer since the second half of the twentieth century and the challenges this transformation has posed for libraries seeking to benefit from modern technologies. It emphasizes the continuing value of the book as a fundamental vehicle of knowledge, while highlighting the role of reading, libraries, media, and cultural institutions in developing readers and supporting public knowledge. The note also frames the issue’s interest in libraries, publishing, and reading, and underlines the importance of indexing and bibliography as tools for disseminating intellectual output and facilitating access for readers and researchers.
