Abstract

This article discusses electronic reference as a contemporary extension of reference sources used by libraries and information centers to provide reference services and respond to users’ inquiries. It begins by emphasizing the role of information sources in meeting the needs of researchers and readers, then explains that reference sources are distinguished by organization, conciseness, and ease of access. Such sources may be general or specialized, printed or electronic. The article defines electronic reference sources as resources accessible through computers, whether via local or global networks, databases, or CD-ROMs, with references to information networks and research library systems. It highlights their advantages, including rapid access, flexible search and retrieval, multiple presentation formats, and the ability to deliver enhanced services to users inside and outside the library. At the same time, it addresses several limitations, such as high costs, the need to train reference librarians, uneven accuracy of online information, and difficulties in identifying intellectual responsibility for some digital sources. The article concludes by stressing the importance of professional standards for evaluating and managing electronic reference sources to ensure accuracy, currency, objectivity, reliability, and quality in reference service.
