Abstract

This article examines library instruction as a fundamental means of developing a culture of reading curiosity, informed inquiry, and scientific research within society. It argues that the role of libraries is not limited to providing books and references, but extends to equipping users with the skills needed to engage consciously and effectively with information sources. The article explains that library instruction includes introducing users to library services, training them to use catalogues, understand the arrangement of collections, locate books and reference works, and develop research and inquiry skills. It also connects library instruction with lifelong learning and calls for integrating library skills into different stages of education in order to strengthen self-directed learning. The article further discusses the idea of the reading society by highlighting the role of libraries in promoting reading awareness, organizing cultural activities, and supporting initiatives that encourage free reading and systematic access to knowledge. It addresses the weakness of reading rates in Arab societies as a cultural indicator requiring educational and cultural reform. The article concludes that linking library instruction to the culture of scientific research is essential for building a knowledge society capable of producing, organizing, and circulating knowledge.
