Abstract
The article examines the challenges facing the Arabic language in the context of the rapid expansion of modern communication technologies and social media platforms. It focuses on the changes these media have introduced into patterns of writing and everyday communication, particularly among youth and students. The article begins by emphasizing the historical depth of Arabic and its capacity for derivation, adaptability, and cultural continuity, before identifying signs of linguistic decline caused by abbreviations, symbols, Latin characters, and hybrid writing forms commonly associated with Arabizi or “Rapish.” It discusses the impact of these practices on education, examinations, and students’ expressive abilities, warning against reducing Arabic to a marginal or hybrid language within digital communication environments. The article adopts a critical yet balanced position: it recognizes the necessity of engaging with contemporary technologies while stressing the importance of preserving Arabic as a language of identity, culture, and knowledge. It concludes by presenting Sharjah’s initiative to employ technology in support of Arabic-language education through digital programs and learning devices for children and students, offering a practical model for using modern tools to strengthen rather than weaken Arabic.
