Abstract
This article examines the role of the school library in educational development, presenting it as an essential component of the teaching and learning process rather than merely a place for storing or lending books. It begins by outlining the concept and functions of the school library, then traces its development in several Arab contexts and in the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the growing recognition of its importance in supporting education, promoting reading, encouraging self-directed learning, and connecting students with both print and non-print information resources. The article also discusses different types of libraries and situates the school library among them, emphasizing that the modern school library should be understood as a learning center, an instructional materials center, and a multimedia center integrated with the school curriculum.
The article further reviews the objectives, services, and standards of the school library in terms of building design, equipment, furniture, audiovisual media, staffing, and information resources, while stressing the importance of a qualified librarian, balanced collections, and programs that foster reading and research skills among students. It also analyzes the relationship between the library, teachers, and students, noting that in some school environments there remains a gap between available resources and actual use because of limited cooperation, time constraints, or insufficient awareness of the library’s educational role. The article concludes that activating the school library as an instrument of educational development requires its genuine integration into classroom practice, better facilities, improved services, and stronger presence across educational stages so that it can effectively contribute to shaping students’ intellectual, cultural, and learning capacities.
