Abstract

The article examines the essential relationship between information and critical thinking, arguing that the value of information is not realized merely through its availability or accumulation, but through the individual’s ability to analyze, evaluate, and critique it with objectivity and integrity. It begins with the phenomenon of information overload produced by the rapid development of communication and information technologies, which has placed individuals and library and information institutions before an unprecedented flow of data and knowledge. This situation requires a shift from collection and preservation toward selection, evaluation, and critical judgment. The article highlights the role of information literacy in enabling learners to access information sources, assess their credibility, distinguish between opinion and fact, and use critical thinking to construct more mature knowledge. It also emphasizes the renewed role of library and information specialists, especially in school settings, as educational and knowledge guides who support inquiry-based learning, source evaluation, identification of knowledge gaps, and the production rather than passive consumption of knowledge. The article discusses the importance of standards for the 21st-century learner in strengthening inquiry, self-assessment, knowledge sharing, and respect for diverse viewpoints. It concludes by calling for the integration of critical thinking into Arab library standards and information literacy programs as a fundamental condition for the meaningful use of information and its transformation into knowledge and wisdom.
