Abstract
The article examines the importance of collaborative learning in library makerspaces as a contemporary transformation that redefines libraries from places for information consumption and individual study into environments for knowledge production, experimentation, innovation, and collective work. It presents the concept, development, and key components of collaborative learning, including positive interdependence, interaction, individual accountability, social skills, and group processing, highlighting its impact on achievement, motivation, and social learning. The article also explains the concept of library makerspaces and their role in supporting creativity, providing access to tools and technologies, and enabling users to learn through practice, experimentation, and trial and error. It discusses various forms of makerspaces, including permanent, temporary, mobile, community-based, and virtual models, as well as the factors that contributed to their spread, particularly digital fabrication, 3D printing, online collaboration, and creative services. The article further distinguishes the roles of makerspaces in public, school, and academic libraries and links their success to staff competencies such as learning ability, adaptability, collaboration, program management, and learning facilitation. It concludes with examples from Sharjah, including Al Jazri Lab at the House of Wisdom and the Young Adults Hall at Sharjah Public Libraries, emphasizing that the success of library makerspaces depends not only on technology, but also on building a community that supports collaboration, innovation, and experiential learning.
