Abstract
This article examines the children’s library as a specialized institution within the broader framework of public and educational libraries, and presents its conceptual foundations as well as its cultural, educational, and social functions. It begins by explaining the place of the child within library cultural policy and the distinctive nature of library services directed to children, then discusses the reasons for the growth of this type of library and its aims in developing reading, self-learning, imagination, and linguistic, artistic, and social abilities, in addition to fostering positive reading and behavioral habits. The article also reviews the different forms of children’s libraries, whether within public libraries, schools, kindergartens, mobile libraries, or home libraries, and shows how their roles vary according to the environment they serve.
The article then moves to the practical dimensions of establishing and operating a children’s library, covering its location, building, equipment, furniture, selection of printed and non-printed collections, methods of cataloging and classification, and sources for collection development. It further discusses the services and activities provided, including storytelling, film showing, singing and music, drawing, exhibitions, competitions, audiovisual presentations, and radio and theatrical activities. The study concludes by identifying the professional and personal qualifications required of the children’s librarian, and includes a sample floor plan of a children’s library together with a list of references, making the article a comprehensive professional guide to the planning, organization, and services of children’s libraries.
